An ostomy is a surgical opening that has been made so that body wastes can be removed, and there are several types of ostomy. An ileostomy is an open ointment that allows for the removal of the skin, a colostomy is created so that the colon can drain properly, and a urostomy is used to divert urine away from the bladder. Any time an ostomy is created for a diversion so that you can drain your body properly while bypassing diseased tissue or organs. One of the biggest problems with an ileostomy or colostomy is the acid. Since your large intestines neutralize the acid in your stool and an ostomy removes the fecal matter before it can pass all the way through the intestines. The area around the ostomy may become red, raw, very painful, and a burning sensation is very common. The pouch must be emptied and replaced on a regular basis, and this can add to skin irritation. Wiping the area of the ostomy with gauze or toilet paper may be unbearable because of the skin damage and soreness. A bidet can be very useful if you have an ostomy, and this appliance can offer your health benefits as well. Completely removing any drainage so that it cannot cause further irritation is critical, but you do not want to get any fibers or other foreign particles in your surgical opening. A bidet allows you to clean your skin and your pouch with water instead of wiping with paper or harsh gauze.

Bidet toilet seats can be an effective way to prevent urinary tract infections (also known as UTIs) in women, especially when aging as hormonal changes that take place after menopause can cause bacteria to be found in the vagina which makes its way into the urethra causing infection. Urinary tract infections are common amongst nursing home residents as well as being a cause of many hospital trips by the elderly. Mary Tinetti, chief of geriatrics at Yale Medical School, and Manisha Juthani-Mehta, an infectious-disease specialist at Yale, states their belief that bidet toilet seats can solve this problem as well as provide additional toilet safety for the elderly in an interview with a New York Times. A study was done and published in The Gerontologist in 2005 entitled "The Potential of Wash-and-Dry Toilets to Improve the Toileting Experience for Nursing Home Residents" by Jiska Cohen-Mansfield, PhD and James R. Biddison, on Aging, Hebrew Home of Greater Washington that was a group of women residents at a non-for-profit nursing home facility in Maryland that was 75 years of age. In addition, the results of the study showed that the residues in the study group had a positive effect on toileting. "Whether it is a bidet toilet seat, bidet attachment or bidet sprayer washing with water is a better alternative to wiping with paper in the urinary tract infections.
